April 24, 2008 4.24.08 - BETHANY, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels split both games of a double header against the Southern Nazarene University Crimson Storm on the final day of the season, Thursday, April 24. The Lady Evangels won the first game, 5-1, in extra innings, but lost the second game, 2-1. In the first game, the Lady Evangels started quickly, scoring a run in the opening inning of the game. Junior Kasey Gardner doubled in Freshman Jenna Harris to take the lead. SNU tied the game in the bottom of the third inning, with a run. Freshman Kat Tims began to settle in and mow down the Crimson Storm batters. Both teams failed to get a runner across the plate in regulation, forcing the game into extra innings. MACU took advantage of the extra stanza, scoring four runs in the top of the eighth inning. Freshman Somer Grimes hit a base clearing triple with the bases loaded, giving the Lady Evangels a 4-1 advantage. Gardner capped off the inning with a RBI single, scoring Grimes, and stretching the lead, 5-1. Tims shut-down SNU in the bottom of the eighth inning, leading to a MACU win. Tims recorded the win, pitching eight innings and striking out two SNU batters. Grimes finished the game1-for-3 with three RBI's and a run scored. Harris picked up two runs in the win, while Gardner went 2-for-4 with two RBI's. In the second game, the Lady Evangels took advantage of Crimson Storm mistakes, and grabbed the lead, 1-0, in the top of the first inning. Both teams were shut-out until the bottom of the fourth inning, when SNU blasted a solo homerun to knot the game up at 1-1. Freshman Kalynne Tweedie and SNU pitcher Rachael Maloney shut-out their respective opponents in the fifth inning. MACU went three-up-and-three-down in the top of the sixth inning, but the Crimson Storm snatched the lead, 2-1, by scoring a run. SNU held off the Lady Evangels in the top of the seventh inning to hold on for the win. Tweedie pitched six innings, giving up two runs and striking-out three SNU batters. Senior Holly Steckbauer went 1-for-2 with a RBI, while Grimes reached base all three times, including a double. The Lady Evangels finish the season 9-41 on the season, and 2-24 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
