April 14, 2008 4.14.08 - ALVA, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels picked up their first Sooner Athletic Conference win in school history against the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Lady Rangers, Monday, April 14. The Lady Evangels split with the Lady Rangers, winning the first game, 2-1, and losing the second game, 5-1. "It feels great to pick up that first conference win," MACU Head Coach Jerald Lewis said. "We have come close several times this year. The girls deserved the win; they have worked hard all year long." MACU batted 12-for-53 on the day, including five extra base hits. The Lady Rangers finished the day going, 10-for-48. The Lady Evangels committed five errors on the day, but the defense only let up two unearned runs. In the first game, neither team was able to get on the board in the first two innings of the game. MACU put together a two-out rally in the top of the third, scoring two runs off of back-to-back doubles. Freshman Somer Grimes hit a double scoring Freshman Jenna Harris, while Junior Kasey Gardner smashed a double, scoring Grimes. The Lady Rangers cut the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring a run. Freshman Kat Tims pitched a great game, and shut-out NWOSU for the remaining of the game behind a stifling Lady Evangel defense, as MACU picked up the win. Tims pitched seven innings, giving up one unearned run and striking out two NWOSU batters. Grimes finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI. Gardner went 1-for-3 with a RBI. In the second game, the Lady Rangers scored two runs in the opening three innings, taking a 2-0 lead. Both teams were scoreless until the sixth inning, when Senior Holly Steckbauer singled Grimes, cutting the lead, 2-1. However, the Lady Rangers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, padding its lead, 5-1. NWOSU fought off the Lady Evangels for the rest of the game, and picked up the win. Freshman Kalynne Tweedie pitched six innings, giving up four earned runs. Grimes went 1-for-4 with a run, while Steckbauer finished 1-for-3 with a RBI. The Lady Evangels are 8-34 on the year, and 1-17 in SAC play. MACU will play Southern Nazarene University at home, Thursday, April 17, in SAC competition.
